PUNJAB TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY (PTU) was established by an act of State Legislature, to promote technical, Management and Pharmaceutical education in the state at the degree level  and above. The University has the mandte to set up centres of Excellence in the Emerging Technologies and for promoting training, research and development in these areas. One of the main focus of the University at this time is in the area of professional and skill oriented technologies to the masses. It is well known that qulity of education is dependant on the quality of teachers and research inputs. All courses are as per the University Grants Commission {UGC} nomenclature reffered to section 22{1] OF UGC. The University is a member of association+ of Indian University {AIU} and also accredited by International University Accredition Association {IUAA} of USA.

In order to provide opportunities to the faculty to improve their qualification and to introduce research activities, the  University has established nine regional centres at various locations in india. The University has also started M- Tech courses and agreed to provide academic research input to these centres. The University bridges the gap between the students and the industry by helping the students in job placements. The University helps the industry in R&D through its various progrmmes under Confederation of Indian Industry [CII]. Distance Education programme in a country like india is an effective way of spreading the education and technology to the people. Distance education is an established and  recognised mode of education, which is in consonance with changing socio-economics needs and emerging demands of the knowledge era.

Keeping up with the spirit of open University system and in accordance with national policy of education, which lays  emphasis on continuing and distance education, the university is providing quality education in rural and urban areas. To equip the students with the expertise in the emerging field Punjab Technical University has set up more than 4000 learning centres in all the regions of india and abroad. They are conducting diploma, post graduate and under graduate  courses in it, fashion and  beauty technology, paramedical and applied technology, hotel management and tourism and media technology.
